The CRT display's power board converts 220V/110V AC to the various DC voltages needed by each circuit. Filter capacitors on the power board bulge or leak after years of use, causing unstable or zero voltage output. Flyback transformer failure also commonly causes black screens.
A burned-out cathode filament, fully failed cathode, or vacuum loss (slow leak) all cause a completely dark screen. These faults are most common in CRT monitors over 20 years old and cannot be repaired — the display must be replaced.
The horizontal scanning circuit generates the high voltage and drives the electron beam deflection. A shorted horizontal transistor, flyback transformer short, or stopped horizontal oscillator prevents high voltage generation, causing a total black screen.
