CNC Monitor Troubleshooting Guide — Common CRT Display Problems

CRT displays on CNC machines fail in predictable ways. This guide helps you diagnose the most common symptoms and determine whether repair or LCD replacement is the best solution for your FANUC, Mitsubishi, Mazak, or Siemens CRT display.

Symptom 1: Blank Screen / No Display

Most likely cause: Flyback transformer failure. The flyback transformer generates the high voltage (10-15kV) needed for the CRT to produce an image. After years of operation, the transformer windings short or the internal rectifier diodes fail.

Secondary causes: Horizontal deflection circuit failure, power supply regulation loss, or CRT heater filament burnout.

Diagnostic check: If you hear the characteristic CRT whine but see no picture, the flyback is likely working but the video amplifier circuit failed. If no whine and no picture, the flyback or horizontal drive has failed.

Symptom 2: Dim or Faint Display

Most likely cause: CRT phosphor wear. The phosphor coating on the inside of the CRT screen degrades over time, reducing light output. This is visible after approximately 10,000-15,000 hours of operation.

Diagnostic check: If the display is visible but very dim even at maximum brightness adjustment, phosphor wear is the cause. CRT brightness cannot be restored — the tube must be replaced or upgraded.

Symptom 3: Flickering or Shrinking Image

Most likely cause: Electrolytic capacitor degradation. Capacitors in the power supply and deflection circuits dry out over time, causing voltage ripple that manifests as flickering, image shrinking, or vertical/horizontal instability.

Diagnostic check: If the image flickers after the machine has been on for 30 minutes, capacitors are failing due to heat. Replacing capacitors is possible but other components may fail soon after.

Solution: LCD replacement eliminates all capacitor-related issues.

Symptom 4: No Image / Raster Only

Most likely cause: Video amplifier circuit failure or electron gun defect. The CRT has high voltage and deflection but no video signal processing.

Repair reality: Finding replacement video amplifier ICs for 1990s-era CRT displays is increasingly difficult. Most repair shops cannot source these parts.

Symptom 5: Intermittent Display

Most likely cause: Loose internal connectors, cold solder joints, or failing power supply. The display works intermittently when the machine vibrates or heats up.

Repair reality: Tracking down intermittent faults can take hours of technician time, often costing more than an LCD replacement.

Solution: LCD module swap in 10-15 minutes, permanently resolves the issue.
